TRANSLATING

I have over a decade’s experience translating with the following language pairs:

French -> English

Spanish -> English

I am extremely adept at picking up language styles in the source text and producing an accurate target text in the appropriate tone. For me, part of being an excellent translator is the ability to express myself eloquently through writing in my own mother tongue, British English. This is where my journalistic and writing experience comes in very handy.

my Translation WORK

There is no typical text type for me – I’ve translated blogs, academic journals, interviews, pamphlets, audiovisual content (subtitles), websites and instructions. Subjects have included international law, the environment, culture, history, fashion, food, beauty, sport and social integration.

Click here to read an example of my work for a French manufacturer of cinema seating. Here you can view a document I translated for a Verti-Call, a social network for rock climbers, while clicking on this link should take you to my version of the Fées en Provence website. This French company makes organic vegan beauty products.

My translations from Spanish to English have been published in EC Tax Journal, International Journal of Refugee Law, CLEER working papers and International Journal of Applied Ethics.

Translation proofreading

I regularly proofread the work of Amanda Ménage, a freelance cosmetics and beauty translator living in France.

Eloise is an excellent translator and writer, one of the best I’ve worked with. She proofreads my own translations on a regular basis. I have worked with her for many years and will continue to do so. Words turn to gold in her hands!”
— Amanda Ménage, French-to-English translator specialising in cosmetics and perfumery

audiovisual translation

I translate subtitles for audiovisual content. This work combines my language skills with the expertise I gained from eight years working as a deaf/HOH subtitler for Red Bee Media, where I subtitled TV programmes for channels such as BBC, Sky and Channel 4.

My audiovisual translations have appeared on sites such as Julbo and Belgium Underground. Click here to read the English subtitles I created for an interview with French journalist Nadine Milo. This example shows my work translating a short clip about French biathlete Anaïs Chevalier.

training and experience

I hold an MA in Screen Translation Studies from the University of Leeds (2006). Previous to that I gained a BA (Hons) in Modern Languages (French and Spanish) from the University of Bristol (2004).

I have highly developed knowledge of both French and Spanish gained from several years studying, living and working in Spain (Madrid, Málaga and Seville) and France (French Polynesia, Réunion Island and Paris) as an adult.
